ok, i want to know how i can find out how much RAM each INDIVIDUAL application is taking up. in activity monitor, theres only real memory and virtual memory. what are these? and do they somehow relatew to the amount of ram being used?

Virtual memory is being taken not from the RAM but the Hard Drive, real memory is the RAM. Add up the real memory and you will see what you are using for RAM.
 
Real Memory is the physical RAM the application is using.
Virtual Memory is the amount of swapfile space the application is using.
 
Do you have these two columns showing? This view shows how much each INDIVIDUAL is taking up.
