The plot: MBP with 10.6.8, had been using TM with a 2gb external HD. Bought a synology server to centralise everything but while copying everything to the server, managed to delete fthe one and only backup I'd made of another external drive which contained all my books, pics, vids :( Yes, I am an idiot. Have done a recovery using R-studio with recovered files all stored on the serverdrive (which is EXT4) as the MBP drive hasn't enough space. PROBLEM: most of the files have been allocated the extension "Unix Executable File" but I've done cmd+i on a few and the preview shows lots of them as jpegs or movies or pdfs. QUESTION: is there a way to force OSX to rescan files to ascertain the correct extensions? Also, the files are no longer in any noticable order or structure. Is there any way to rebuild the file structure from what's been recovered?
