file I/O error has occurred pdf

I have a mac mini running lion server software with all updates. Medium to large pdf files that are opened from the server crash, the pages go blank and I get an error message that reads, file I/O error has occurred. Using a PC to access the server. Any help is greatly appreciated as this is getting very frustrating.
