I must doing something wrong with the file name search in leopard. Just as a test I decided to do a search for the Apache Web Server configuration file (httpd.conf). It "lives" in the /etc/httpd directory.

So I click Cmd-Shift-F to bring up Finder's "find by name" window.

I choose "Name":"is":httpd.conf and get 0 results. I also tried clicking File name and tried all kinds of other criteria (other than is). I tried searching *.conf. Heck, I tried all kinds of stuff with no luck. From what I read on macworld and macosxhints this should work.

Can anyone shed any light on what I'm missing? Thx!

/etc is a folder that is not visible in OSX, so Finder will not search in there.

Ugh...I'm a recent switcher and as much as I love OS X I think it stinks there isn't a UI that allows me to search my HD for files. Those are some serious training wheels!

My apologies, but I don't understand...too much of a noob I guess...

Sorry, typo on my part. When you have finder as the front window, hit the Go menu from the menubar, then select Go to folder, then type in /etc/. This will make that folder appear in finder.
