I cannot rename or add any files (drag or File>Newfolder) on a bunch of files on my external harddrive. I think that it is because I created those files on my old mac (which I have sold). If I Get Info for drive and under permissions check "Ignore Ownership on this volume" then I can move/rename files again. But the thing is I need to have Ignore Ownership unchecked because I use the drive for backup (otherwise it won't copy certain files if it is checked). What do i need to do?

You can do 1 of 2 things. You can change all of the files manually to the correct permissions buy doing the get info thing and changing the permissions to read/write for your username.

Change your username and password to the same as the old Mac. That should work.

The username and password are the same. I think it's the computer name that's different (not short name). I don't think that can be changed can it?

edit: I can't even change permissions, it's all grayed out.
