What are file receipts ??? I've down loaded SW from apple and I see these receipts in the HD - library area -------- are they important ????

Yes, they are important. Among other things, Software update uses them to know which software you have and what versions so it knows what updates to present.

They're small and you want them there.

When you repair permissions, Disk Utilities refers to the Receipts for the correct permissions settings. You really, really want them there.
