file recovery HELP please

Hi
i have securely deleted photos from and external HHD.. have i lost them completely or is it only the mac's HHD that get's securely "empty trash"..
Also if i can recover them (and theres a lot :/ ) what's the best way to get them back or soft wear with out breaking the bank?

Secure erase writes zeros....Your photos are gone I'm afraid.

i was hoping it didn't do that on ext HHDs..oh well
