File recovery. Help!

We lost a few files we were working on yesterday. Nothing saved after about 1PM can be found. Eek! . Is there a good way to deal with this, see if there are files there that are not showing up somehow perhaps? Or a good file recovery program perhaps?

I'm assuming you don't have Time Machine active?

I do, and thank god! Actually that's where I got the file from 1PM, which had a lot of what had been done. So actually it hasn't saved for longer than 1PM. The work is being done on a laptop, so the HD for time machine isn't alway plugged in. Arg.

It does feel that way! Unfortunately I don't know what lesson I learned. (which is probably the problem!! )
