I've seen this topic posted a few times and there are really random posts that tend to conflict each.
Recently I trashed a folder of 15 gigs of my film projects and i freaked out. Luckily, this was on my secondary hard drive and I was ever so careful not to put anything new on the drive so I knew it wouldn't be overwritten. Then I searched around and found all this conflicting info, then when i tried a few programs, (ie Norton, Diskwarrior, etc) i found they weren't compatible with Panther and i really started freaking out.
I found and wound up using Data Rescue and it was able to find the files I had trashed and recocovered them. Oddly enough, in the product description for Data Rescue, it says that it CANNOT recover files deleted in OS X.
I just wanted to let people know this worked for me and that there is hope if you trash something, just be super careful not to overwrite.
