When using SMB file share protocol to exchange files, Mac <—>iPad (or iPhone), over WiFi, the following occurs:
- Frequently a message is displayed showing that the file on the Mac already exists, and asks if I want a duplicate created, or do I wish to replace the existing file.
- Selecting “replace” deletes the file on the Mac, but another message is displayed stating “transfer cannot be completed because the file is too large. At this point, starting the process over is normally successful. And your file on Mac is gone.
- The resolution, and not a cumbersome workaround, is to delete the file on the Mac first, then transfer from your iPhone or iPad.
- I was also able to transfer a file from Mac to iPad using this method. I have moved files to & from while in my living room recliner, with my Mac in my office. No errors happened, so I’m not certain where the problem exists, but all fingers point to the Mac.
- There is a 2Gb maximum file size when transferring to Mac using the SMB protocol. (My files weren’t 10% of that size.) Hopefully Apple will increase this limit.
- The SHARE function can be configured in Mac System>Share as Read/Write, or for Guest connections, Read only.
- Similar capability exists with Android phones and Windows PC’s, but you will need to download an app for SMB Share.
- For older Mac’s, you’ll need to verify that Port 445 is “Open”.
