When using SMB file share protocol to exchange files, Mac <—>iPad (or iPhone), over WiFi, the following occurs:

  • Frequently a message is displayed showing that the file on the Mac already exists, and asks if I want a duplicate created, or do I wish to replace the existing file.
  • Selecting “replace” deletes the file on the Mac, but another message is displayed stating “transfer cannot be completed because the file is too large. At this point, starting the process over is normally successful. And your file on Mac is gone.
  • The resolution, and not a cumbersome workaround, is to delete the file on the Mac first, then transfer from your iPhone or iPad.
  • I was also able to transfer a file from Mac to iPad using this method. I have moved files to & from while in my living room recliner, with my Mac in my office. No errors happened, so I’m not certain where the problem exists, but all fingers point to the Mac.
  • There is a 2Gb maximum file size when transferring to Mac using the SMB protocol. (My files weren’t 10% of that size.) Hopefully Apple will increase this limit.
  • The SHARE function can be configured in Mac System>Share as Read/Write, or for Guest connections, Read only.
    • Similar capability exists with Android phones and Windows PC’s, but you will need to download an app for SMB Share.
    • For older Mac’s, you’ll need to verify that Port 445 is “Open”.
    • Reply to me with solutions or questions. I enjoy sharing what I’ve learned. .

For a short backup, even if I don’t have an internet connection (rare, yes, but….) I can confirm that the file is on the Mac right away, in the folder I want it in. The whole process takes +/- 30 seconds. I can do this for a variety of file types as well, such as a PDF, where I haven’t decided which Mac app to drop it into, such as an image that I don’t need in Photos - something I’m going to use later for example. I use iCloud for photos, Notes, and Contacts.

Home Router VPN may be the solution or device VPN. I would advice Device VPN in these case. ;)

This happens using Apple’s Files? Which version of iPadOS? Which version of macOS? Personally I use FileBrowser or FE File Explorer and never encountered that problem.

I’m using Sequoia on an M2 Mini, and iPadOS 17.7.5 on my IPP. Note that I’ve read the issue I’ve discussed happens on new devices as well. (Plan to upgrade to new M4 IPP soon). I can complete my transfers in this native mode without clutter of additional apps, but if I ever need to do some heavy lifting I will look at the solutions mentioned in these replies. Thanks.
