I have a 2012 Mac Mini running MacOS Yosemite. Given the lack of updates to the Mac desktop line I am looking into setting up a PC. I only need it to run one architectural CAD 3D graphics program, FormZ. It technically works on the Mac Mini, but the graphics card is limiting my use of the program, not to mention I could have a much faster cpu at this point. I want to run everything else on my Mac Mini with MacOS.
My question: Is it possible to setup a PC running Windows 10 and have it share files with the Mac Mini? By share files I mean have the files stored on the Mac Mini, but have them open and run on the PC. Or would I need to setup Mac Server to do this?
To be more exact: My CAD program references images files to render the model and I need to do a lot of importing/exporting in and out of the program. Therefore, I would like the ability to keep all the files on the Mac as these files are used in other programs on the Mac side. In theory I could keep only the FormZ files on the PC that would work. As long as I can import/export to the Mac.
I also don't want to simply transfer files back and forth. I would end up with duplicate files on the Mac and PC side and that would suck. Essentially I want a typical server type network setup where all the files live on the server and the PC would essentially just open them, run them, but everything is saved back to the main server. If I can do this with just two computers (the Mac Mini and PC) great. If I need to introduce a third computer as the server that is also fine.
I have a wireless router. I would prefer ethernet connections, but wireless would also work.
I don't want to switch to Windows and no for various reasons I don't want an iMac, a 2013 Mac Pro, or a new Macbook Pro running in clamshell mode. I simply need to PC for cpu speed and graphics.
Thanks for any help.
