Spent a long time trying to fathom why the Shared Folders' permissions I set in System Prefs/Sharing are not saved when exiting SysPrefs. No matter what I set for users and groups, they are NOT applied and silently discarded.

However, I eventually discovered that if I directly set them in the Finder, using Get Info on those folders and have to authenticate when I unlock the settings, they are then saved and subsequently shown in SysPrefs/Sharing/FileSharing/Shared Folders.

So seems to me that the problem is System Prefs not requesting the authentication required to be able to modify these permissions and hence any changes requested are simply lost.

At this stage I have to say that this is on a Mac Pro 5,1 running Monterey 12.7.4 via Open Core (Legacy Patcher), but I am unable to think of any reason why that, or anything else about this fresh install of MacOS, would cause System Prefs to simply not deal with permissions as it should.

So I am left with the conclusion that that this is a gigantic Apple f**kup. Not unheard of, but then I would surely have come across this problem when searching to find a solution. However I did not, so am I the only person to ever discover this problem with Monterey's File Sharing configuration in System Prefs?

Anyone come across this problem and/or can clarify what is actually causing it?
