I know disk utility has the option to write 0's and 1's 1, 7 or 35 times when formatting a drive. But is there an app or utility that can do this to individual files or free space on a drive so you don't have to format it to permanently delete data? For windows there's fileshredder.org that works really well, anything similar for Osx?

Yes, Disk Utility does that for free space, not just formatting:

You can also use the Secure Empty trash feature of OS X if you want to securely delete individual files. While in the Finder, go to the Finder menu >> Secure Empty Trash.
