This is more likely related to the speed of the SD card itself rather than an issue on the Mac itself. Can you take a photo of the SD card with the label visible and readable? That would help determine what speed the card itself is rated for.
I have since gotten hold of another SD card of the same make and type and files transfered to it OK, so it
does point towards the card being at fault.
If you do a lot of adding and deleting of files on an SD, you should occasionally format it.

open the macOS Terminal. Copy the above command sequence, paste it into the terminal, hit return to execute.
