I'm not very technically knowledgeable so would appreciate some help here. I am hoping to upgrade to High Sierra but I understand there is a big change in the file system with the move to Apple File System (APFS).

I use a 13" MacBook Pro - the last type they sold of the classic model. I replaced the HDD with an SSD. I keep seeing references to the file system being a bit of a problem with certain SSDs so while I know the net amplifies any complaints it has caused me to not upgrade yet. Should I be concerned and contact Crucial regarding my SSD before I upgrade or is it really no issue? I also use a couple of external hard drives and wonder if that will cause any problems.

Basically my confusion boils down to the impression I had formed that file systems had to be chosen when a drive was formatted and couldn't be changed after and that everything had to match. So if I have understood correctly, SSD Macs adopt the new file system as part of the upgrade but other things like SD cards and external HDDs don't?

I appreciate this is probably all very basic stuff but every other thread I find about it seems very technical and I wonder if someone in the know can explain it in layman's terms. Thanks in advance!

I would go for it, and just do a clean install if you are worried. I am not sure of any issues people are having, and if they are its probably do to a failed install due to bad conversion to APFS. At the end of the day a file system is just software, it will not be incompatible with any SSD. For reference I have an old Crucial M500 480GB and APFS is running just fine on it.
