It is just a USB cable, with some kind of controller I guess, to enable file sharing.
Why not use Gigabit Ethernet, unless your computer does not have such port?
Though USB 2.0 is faster than 10/100 Ethernet.

Yes. It's slow. It's just a USB 2.0 cable. Nothing special. Firewire 800 would be 2-3 times faster.

While I agree, that FW 800 is faster, there a very few non-Apple computers out there with Firewire, and if they have a Firewire port, they have a 4-pin port, limiting one to Firewire 400 speeds.
When I bought my first laptop in 2000, I got one with a 6-pin FW port, as I was used to that port and liked it. My next laptop, Samsung X30, only had a 4-pin port, but at least it had Firewire, but it was harder to find.

I have yet to see a non-Apple notebook or desktop tower with a Firewire 800 port, that was not added afterwards.

I wasn't suggesting FW 800 as an alternative, especially since the OP didn't specify what type of computers they planned to use the cable with (Mac-Mac, Mac-PC, PC-PC). I was just offering a speed comparison, to illustrate how slow that cable is, by comparison. As the site says:
Transfer files from PC to PC, PC to Mac, Mac to PC or Mac to Mac

USB 2.0 IS FAST ENOUGH. Don't argue. And your help is need by ThomasBoss I guess.
