I am thinking about turning on file vault on my 700mhz iBook. The security it provides would be useful to me. I'm wondering if all that on-the-fly compression and decompression would have a noticeable effect on system performance. Anybody have any experience?

how useful would the secuirty be to you? If its really useful then i wouldnt say the preformance of it would matter...

Anyway, i had it on for a whole 2 days, pre-patch mind you. Its not as nippy as not having it on but its not a unbearable slowdown...

I meant to post this on the Panther board but I evidently screwed up. Can it be moved? Sorry.

Nick-Doof--good point. I guess to be specific I should have said file vault would be useful to me if the system wouldn't trip over it. If it would slow the system down much it would be better to do without the security.
