Apple subsidiary Filemaker today announced substantial updates to its Filemaker Go and Filemaker Go for iPad applications in the App Store, adding a number of new features that had been highly requested by users.

Several of the primary enhancements are related to new tools for enhanced sharing possibilities. Users can now create PDFs of their databases directly within Filemaker Go and store them on their mobile devices or email them to others. The new feature offers simple creation of reports and invoices while on the go. Users can now also save complete copies of their databases and share them with others via email, eliminating the need to sync with a computer for direct database transfer.

The new updates also bring tools for working with photos and other media:
The update also delivers new ways to work more efficiently with photos and other media and information. FileMaker Go users can capture photos on an iPhone, or take photos that are already in the photo library of an iPhone or iPad, and insert them directly into a FileMaker Go database. Photos stored in a database can be emailed out later using FileMaker Go.
Additional enhancements include the ability to import records from other databases using script steps and support for a newly-enhanced Filemaker URL protocol that developers of other iOS applications can use to interface with Filemaker Go.

Filemaker Go for iPhone and iPod touch is priced at $19.99 while Filemaker Go for iPad is priced at $39.99. The new updates are of course free for existing users.

This is one of the most random news stories I've seen on MR in a long long time

A question for Filemaker Go users:
Can you view pdf files contained in a container field, maybe open them in iBooks or goodReader or something? That would make all the difference for me. I'd appreciate any pointers.

Can't be worse than that random social network app that was put up last month.

Oh god yeah, I'd forgotten all about that fiasco. So is this just another advert that's pretending to be a news story? If so, shame.

I fear that ShiftyPig has hit the nail on the head here. Notice that every time an application's name is hyperlinked, the link leads to MR's sister site AppShopper.

I have no issues with site's using affiliate links to make a few bucks, but would rather see the link lead to the actual iTunes store.

Or maybe something like FileMaker Go (AppShopper link) so that folks like me don't errantly click the link expecting iTunes to pop up.

It would be news if MS Access was released for the iPad.

Filemaker is the closest thing out there to Access right now and is one of the few apps that make an iPad viable for business.

No universal app?!

As an owner of both an iPad and iPhone, I fail to understand why the premium app isn't universal. It just rubs me the wrong way; I appreciate the iPad app packs more, but why payagainso you can access your info from another device, other than greed?

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPod; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7E18 Safari/528.16)

They should change their name back to Claris and make mobile versions of AppleWorks :D

Just kidding :D

More on topic...

I was just playing around with this using a multipage layout and learned that it does NOT respect sliding and "no print" settings. I have several fields that should always slide to fit on the first page, but it prints the PDF just as it appears on the screen, which makes it unusable. While I appreciate the progress this app is making (it is light years ahead of where FMTouch was), it is frustrating to be stopped from using it productively by these little things around printing. Maybe 1.3 or 2.0 in November will get around to making it truly work as you would expect it to do.

Filemaker Go

Our company has a series of 38 linked databases, and we're still on FileMaker 7.0.4. Our entire company uses it, each department with different databases and views.

So, I thought that ANY Filemaker mobile solution would not work for my iPhone 3GS, but I tried FileMaker Go anyway.

Instead of seeing and editing the database live, I have to drag and drop our database files into the App section of Filemaker Go, inside of iTunes.

However, our entire database works perfectly. I can view everything, sort, and see everything that's been going on.

I am pretty impressed!!!

It does offer good functionality, but it's hard for it to include complete touches like the sliding and no printing items as found in the desktop application. It's got a lot going for it, but if your application uses features it does not support, either its a no-go, or you have to change how your database is setup.

I kind of think I'll create some databases expressly for the iphone app; ones where I can take advantage of the functionality that the iphone app supports, viewable on a small screen. Such databases can be intermediate in nature, a hybrid between the iphone version and the full-blown desktop version.

Deleting filemaker database file on ipad

Can anyone tell me how to delete old database files off the iPad with filemaker go?
Any input appreciated
