I have a MacBook Pro on a network with a number of Windows machines (first foray into the world of Mac!)
On the Windows network I have a Western Digital network drive. I am using this to backup the various machines on the network. I tried to use Time Machine and have seen various posts here and elsewhere about the setting change to allow networked drives to be seen on the MacBook Pro. I haven't got this working yet, but that's not my question.
If I copy of a file onto the network drive, it appears to copy successfully but disappears as soon as it is copied. If I do it with the GUI using Finder, then the file icon appears briefly over the network drive window and then disappears. If I look in the drive from a PC, the file is not there. (E.g. I create a small text file with TextEditor and save it on the desktop; then drag and drop the file from the Desktop into the Finder window showing the network drive, it shows for an instant and then disappears and when I look from a PC, of Mac Finder, or Mac Command Line, the file has gone).
If I copy using the command line from a terminal window then the file also disappears (not shown in the GUI Finder view, and similarly if I do "ls" from the command line window I get a blank list) but it is actually there. I can see it on the PC and if I do an explicit operation on the file from the Mac - it is successful - e.g.
echo "hello" > tim.txt
cat tim.txt
and I do get "hello" back. Whereas a plan "ls" reveals an empty directory.
To connect the network drive, I have simply made the command line tweak to allow network drives to be seen, and then in the Finder I have clicked on the network drive and selected Guest and clicked connect (the drive is set for open access).
The setup of the MacBook Pro is very vanilla - I don't know any different!
Any suggestions on why the files are disappearing when I use the network drive from the Mac?
