Files in trash become corrupted

Normally every time I do an iphone sync, I retrieve the old versions of iphone apps from the trash and save it the documents folder. Recently when I do a sync, the file name becomes corrupted with lots of random symbols and characters, and the files take up zero kilobites. If I try to drag the files to the desktop, they don't copy over.

Does anyone know how to fix this issue? Thanks in advance.

I'm running a macbook with snow leopard 10.6.8.
