Files not opening with app I choose to...

So this has been bugging me for a while. Why is it certain files will not open with what I choose for them? So for instance MP4 video files, I select open with, choose other, then Always Open With...and chose VLC. Yet every time I open an MP4 file it tries to open in Tagr for some dumb reason.

I'm not sure what's going on, all apps are up to date.

What Mac OS X version do you use? Have you tried associating .mp4 files to open with another application like QT Player and seen, if that sticks?

Having the same problems with images. Want them to open with Fireworks...but they keep opening with preview when I double click.
