Files remain open on server after closed in finder

We have been having issues with copying files and moving folders and finally discovered that until FINDER is restarted, files appear to be OPEN on the server. So, long after we've worked on a file, the system still thinks we have it open. Has anyone experienced/solved this? We are on 10.6.5.
