filesharing poisoned

I used to have poisoned on my old computer but it doesn't seem to work any more. Does it still work? Has it been outlawed, is it legal or illegal. To be honest I am not sure anymore with all the publicity filesharing has had. I just want to be able to download some old tunes that are not usually available on cd, but would prefer it to be legal. Napster won't work on OSX, and I have heard so many bad reports of limewire. Any bright ideas??
