i heard time machine doesn't play well with filevault, is this true?if it is too much of a hassle what is an good alternative to filevault?

The issue is that Time Machine can only backup your home directory when you are logged out. My solution is to create an encrypted DMG on the backup HD or a TrueCrypt volume on it. Then use a program like Carbon Copy Cloner to do the backups, which works while you're logged in. CCC does let you do incremental backups like Time Machine, but it does not delete older information when the drive fills up so requires periodic maintenance on your part.
