Hello MacRumors forum,

my MacBook Pro needs a display repair (Staingate). Apples Service site recommends to activate FileVault to encrypt the data on the disc before handing it over to an authorised Service Provider. At the moment it isn't activated.

My problem: when I try to activate the FileVault option in the settings I got every time the error that the server couldn't execute this "operation".

What should I do? Is there a workaround?

Mac OS is on version 10.13.1.

An alternative to encrypting your drive is to clone your Mac then create a second admin User. Boot from the new Admin User and delete your regular User's account.

When you get your Mac back, simply boot from the clone and erase the internal and copy back your data.

Software used to Clone:

CarbonCopyCloner http://www.bombich.com/download.html (All options are available free for 30 days)

SuperDuper! http://www.shirt-pocket.com/ (Free forever to do an erase and install. Purchased version allows for smart updates and schedules)
