filevault2 vs. Disc utility encryption

I'm a bit confused why people talk about filevault2 so often when it's easily possible to encrypt a file with disc utility..

Is it less safe or something?

Filevault2 is just easier and more transparent. Just turn it on and forget it and the entire disk is encrypted. Using the encrypted images from Disk Utility causes come fussing around opening and closing the encrypted images.
