Hi

My young son has the final cut pro x and a macbook (about 3 months old)

Anyway. It all just about works, but does struggle a bit when playing back videos within the program, that have been heavily edited with special effects etc.

Forgive my ignorance but is this a ram problem? (has 2 gb ram) or perhaps graphics card? How can we improve the performance ?

Any ideas?

Quite simply, yes. Final cut uses significant amounts of RAM. I have used final cut express on a 2008 mac book but you have to be patient when rendering and always make sure you have the power supply plugged in.

Hope this helps. Not sure how easy a RAM upgrade is for the last mac books.
