In iMovie 08 I found the export to Apple TV settings a good compromise for playing on my PS3.
I have upgraded to Final Cut Express 4.
I exported to the pre-defined Apple TV setting and the resulting movie was output in the 4:3 standard instead of the 16:9 standard.

I can see no way to adjust the settings, what can I do about this ?

What format is the original footage in? If it is 16:9 DV, then you need to export as 853x480 instead of 720x480. A lot of video players do not see the anamorphic flag in the file, so they show it in the wrong aspect ratio if you leave it in the native resolution.

The footage was AVCHD imported in to FCE. The scratch files were of AIC codec at a resolution of 1440 x 1080. The wrapper was .MOV.

When I made my edits finished the project, I selected to export as Apple TV format, but this when finished was the wrong aspect ratio.
