Final cut Express acting weird

Hi, I'm having some problems in FCE: the audio is there, but not playing. I think it's an effect of some preference, but I can't seem to find what precisely. The audio seems to be playing (waveforms, audio meters are all showing sound) but nothing comes out.

I think it has something to do with the real time rendering, because in the RT menu in the sequence window, all I get to choose is play base layer only or not.

Can anyone help me out? I'm working with a deadline.

Whenever I have problems hearing playback from my computer speakers, I always recheck my setting for canvas playback - View>Video Out>Canvas playback. This is usually a problem when your video camera/input device is still connected and FCE wants to playback through that device.
