Final Cut Express HD - Widescreen Canvas?

Hi, I'm using the most up to date version of Final Cut Express HD. I'm wondering... why are my clips in the Viewer widescreen, but when dragged over to the Canvas they shrink automatically to fit within the box, leaving black horizontal bars at the top and bottom? I'm trying to output to true widescreen. This was automatically done in iMovie HD, so there has to be a way to do it in FCEHD, right?

Any help is appreciated. Thanks! :)
