Final Cut Pro 4.5 Len Flare won't work

I use OSX 3.9 (Panther). I have Final Cut Pro 4.5 and the Lens Flare effect won't function. All the control parameters show up as they should but there is a grey question mark icon beneath them.

Please can anyone help.
