This just in. The new Final Cut Pro 6.0.1 will let you transcode AVCHD in the Log & Transfer window as either Apple ProRes 422 or AIC. But they bloat big time. The APR422 files are 10x the size of the AVCHD files. No prediction on transcode size so make sure your scratch drive has plenty of space.
2 Minutes of a 200MB AVCHD File yields a 2GB APR422 File. So it's a GB a minute 60GB/hr or about 4.5x the size of native DV files.
Also available for $30 is Voltaic a new application to transcode AVCHD to QT Files you can edit in iMovie etc. Those QT Movie files are 4x the size of the AVCHD files. not bad. But it can only do 5 minutes at a time.
