Ok, so my dad just picked me up shake 4 and it says that i can just go back and forth with my files between Final Cut Pro and Shake. When I looked further into it, it tells me how to send the movie from Final Cut Pro to Shake. It tells me that there is an option under files that says send and then a suboption that says Sent to Shake. I've been looking and I cannot find this option is because i have Final Cut Pro HD 4.5 and the Send to Shake option is in the new one. And if that is so what kind other video files does Shake accept?

Please could somebody help me out,
it would be very appreciated.:)

It'll probably take any QT file. I'd be shocked if .mov using DV compression didn't work. FWIW, upgrading to FCS with FCP 5, etc is only $199. Considering that your dad just "picked up" a $3000 piece of software for you, surely he won't mind another $200.
