Is rendering time and screen space the only things that separate what a Final Cut Pro user can do on a fully loaded 15 pro retina vs 27 imac?

Or can a user pretty much pull off all final cut has to offer when working with 1080p video.

Just entering film editing world and don't want to limit my growth by choosing portability over power.

I've heard several "pros" online tell prospective students to go for power, but they only talk about rendering
