Takashi Tokita, longtime director at producer at video game company Square-Enix, announced today that the company will be releasing a mobile-optimized version of Final Fantasy VI for iOS this Fall, reports Kotaku. The game was originally released in 1994 as Final Fantasy III in North America, and follows the release of various Final Fantasy games on iOS, with Final Fantasy V [Direct Link] being the most recent release by the company this past March.
"The battle systems have been altered for the other [mobile remakes] for Final Fantasy and VI will be the same. For instance grinding was an issue and people had to spend a lot of time leveling up. Now on the mobile devices the battle systems have been adjusted so you don't have to fight as much and can enjoy the game for what it is."
Tokita also teased a potential release of the mega-popular Final Fantasy VII for mobile devices sometime in the future:
The Legacy series won't necessarily end with VI, Tokita said, when we asked him if it could include VII, VIII, IX, X and beyond. "We are aware that we have tons of VII fans," he noted. "We have VII fans in our own company. If this Legacy project works out well, we would like to one day be able to work with VII."

VII is a no-brainer, but when they get to games like X, controls will be an issue.

I would really love some Kingdom Hearts games myself. Especially KH2, which I never got past the first hour before shelving my PS2.

Both!

Which one would be the most fun to replay out of the series?

VI is my all time Final Fantasy favorite. Everything about it is amazing - from the story to the characters, you really felt for them. (Darn you, Kefka!!!). VII would be my next favorite in the series. I will be getting both of these when they are released, no questions asked.

The milk us for money more then dairy farmers milk their own cows.
Anyone who wants these games already has them on multiple formats already.

I have never properly played these games. I tried them and din't like what I saw and didn't try again. If the price is right I might try them again.

I remember FFVII being 4 disks on the PS1, That a couple of gigs of data, how are they getting around that for mobile devices?

To be fair it was the only FF game I ever played.

VI for me personally because it holds the most nostalgic value out of any in the series. Most people (due to age differences) will probably tell you VII though.

TBH, from VI on (VI was the last from the 16 bit systems era) you really can't go wrong if this is your thing. That's the deal with FF; you're either into it or you're not. (Disclaimer - I am referring to consoles only, the mobile only versions can be hit or miss for many reasons.)

Yeah but the add on controller will be available long before those come out. To my knowledge any FF beyond what was developed for NES, SNES and PS1 has not been re-released on any platform to date?

They would make a fortune releasing FF7 on iOS. Even just a straight PS1 port with no improvements would sell like hot cakes. Not sure why they haven't done it already.

One of the most awesome moments of my childhood gaming life was when you thought the game was over; but in actuality (spoiler alert?) you just went from the light world to the dark world. We thought we beat the game, only to realize we were only half way. Was both infuriating and awesome at the same time!

Keep in mind, this was before the internet, social media etc - so game secrets and plots were not known in advance, you just played through the game not knowing what to expect.

VII, VIII, IX on iOS and I'd be happy!  :D

EventhoughIalreadyhavetheactualgamesbutIneedthemanyway

I will not calm down! Iwillnot!

Can't wait to play VI again!

This isn't aimed at you necessarily, but can we as a collective whole stop saying 'sell like hot cakes'? There's about a thousand other ways to express this yet this site consistency uses this idiomatic expression.

No.

Have a good day

how much audacity must a person possess in order to walk around telling other people

how they want you to talk...

The download size on the PS Store is 1.3GB. So it won't be any bigger than other high end iOS games.

I would LOVE to see FFVI, it's my favorite of the series! That being said I want the original version with original text, not the dumbed down version with dumbed down text like what was released on the gameboy advance.

Having FFVII on ios would be an awesome addition, it really brings back some childhood memories. In fact, I think I'm going to pull out my old PS1 copy and play it tonight. Love that game! Also loved Xenogears, but that game doesn't get as much praise or recognition from square enix (squaresoft). :(

It's also such an anachronism. How about "sell like iPhones". "Sell like Retina iPad minis". "Sell like Grand Theft Auto..". :)

It was 3 unless you got the Japanese international version which had a fourth bonus content disc (which is awesome btw but has never seen a Western release).

I have my original PSX copy, the Steam copy and a pirated .ISO.

Will I buy the iOS version...hell yeah!!

I think Crisis Core would be good on iOS too but I can never see it making an appearance, they can't even get it on PSN due to some stupid licensing law regarding the final song in the game.
