Please correct me if I am wrong. Here is what the final out of pocket cost for a new 32gb iPhone 4 on launch day.

$299 + tax@$699 (9.75% CA) + $18 upgrade fee = $385.15 out the door.

Any other fees I missed?

Don't let them charge you the 18 dollar upgrade fee. If you call and explain to them that you don't want to pay it, they will wave it.

you pay tax on the unsubsidized price. at least that's how it is in California.

Why would you pay taxes on the $699 price? Isn't it just on the $299?

California and I also think mass state laws force stores to charge full retail price rather than subsidized prices. Welcome to the world of heavily democratic states trying to raise tax revenue to support social programs that may or may not work.

California like the rest of the country has about 45% of nits residents who pay zero state income taxes. Thus us in addition to the 47% of US residents who pay zero federal taxes although they pay payroll taxes.

I ordered mine from the Apple Store for delivery to NJ and was only charged our 7% tax on the $299.

It depends on ur FAN account. Some FANs allow waiver of upgrade fees. Some don't.

If u don't have a FAN, they may make a one time exception but the next time they won't waive the fee.

They have waived my upgrade fee in 2008 but not in 2009.

Prior to that I always got my upgrade fee waived but my fan had changed it's contract although I still get 24% off voice and data so I really can't complain simce the discount applies to all 4 of my iPhone data lines which means I only pay $22.70 for unlimited data.

I am on Citigroup FAN account. Don't know if they waive the $18 for us. Do I ask Apple to waive it since I am picking it up there on the 24th? Or do I call AT&T?

hmm.. they didn't waive my $18 fee for ANY of the iPhones previously. Maybe if I mention it they will this time, I am going to be upgrading 2 lines what are the chances the will waive both of these for me? (Hey, I can hope can't I?)
