FinalCut Pro 5.1 on new MacBooks?

Hello. We are going to buy a new MacBook Pro for college soon. I have a copy of FinalCut Pro 5.1 on discs, and the current upgrade pack Final Cut Studio. I wonder if I will be able to install the older version and then the upgrade on the new Mac. I don't think the upgrade will work on its' own. Thanks in advance for your help.
