OK, this has been bothering me ever since my friend's iphone died and he no longer had an ios device and I haven't seen this sollution anywhere (it's not just reset network settings and it was happening in 7.0.3)

OK so here's my setup. iPhone 5s, iPad 3rd gen wifi only, and a macbook pro with os x 10.8. Before I started all the things today this was the status. He was able to get in and access the phone and turn off imessage from the phone (I think the screen got all busted up. also I don't know what version of ios he was on). From my ipad and from the macbook, I was unable to send a message as his name was red and said he didn't support imessage. From my phone it would send to the group (consists of me, person "a" that has an iphone with ios 6, and person "b" with the busted iphone and now running some non-apple phone). It would send it as imessage, would indicate to me it was delivered and person "a" received and of course mr "b" over there didn't. I could confirm he didn't because if I sent a message directly to just him it would try imessage, fail, and then immediately send over sms.

Here's the order of things I did since perhaps what I think fixed it was actually fixed somewhere else:

  • log out of imessage on macbook
  • on ipad, in this order, sign out of facetime, sign out of imessage (since this is wifi only all it did was show the login screen), reset all settings (this was so I could see how much damage that did afraid I may have to do this on iphone)
  • on iphone sign out of facetime, sign out of imessage, turn off imessage, reset network settings
  • on iphone after reboot I readd wifi, turn on imessage, log in, and sent a new message to group. sent as imessage
  • on phone again did same process as above up to reset network settings
  • on reboot turned on imessage but didn't login to apple (so it would just do imessage to cell number), creating new group again with message sends as text. sending to person "a" who has an iphone sent as imessage
  • turn on facetime and login to apple, again things worked
  • enable my apple id email as a destination to receive facetime, everything works
  • sign in to apple for imessage, everything worked
  • enable my apple id email as a destination for imessage, it breaks
  • change imessage back to just accept from my phone number again, restart, and it works again
  • sign back in to imessage and facetime on ipad, accepting messages from phone number and apple id. sign back in on macbook, everything works

So to summarize all that, on the iphone only I can only accept imessages to my cell number. The moment I add my apple id it breaks. As my cell number was always my caller id in imessage this works fine. If anyone else has been as frustrated as I have maybe this will help. So the "fix" is to setup imessage on your phone to only receive messages from your phone's number and that's it.
