I feel I have no choice but to return the new iPhone SE for one reason, the updated home button.
The last few weeks I have had the phone I have been very happy with the phone performance, but my feelings on this new phone have changed now that the cold weather has arrived and I need to wear gloves. The new home button does not recognize a touch with gloves on. I need to take my hand out of the glove to touch the home button for it to be responsive. This is not an acceptable solution for me where I live because almost half the year is cold and I am frequently outside.

I was a long time 1st gen SE user and before that, long time iPhone 5 user. I have never wanted to return an Apple product until now.

Now I am left wondering, what options do I have once I return this? What is the latest iPhone available that is no bigger in size than the current SE and has a real click home button and does Apple still sell them? If not, what alternative to iPhone should I look like into that is close to an SE?

Would appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks

Size wise the new 12 Mini is smaller than your new SE2. It’s closer in size to your old SE. However it uses Face ID rather than Touch ID so no Home button. Face ID should solve your glove problem.

The 12 Mini can be preordered on Nov. 6 if that is something you might be interested in.

My only other suggestion is to use the Passcode on your new SE2 when you are outside.

The new iPhone 12 Mini is similar in size as your original SE, but uses FaceID instead of a home button.

Personally I got used to FaceID within a few hours vs TouchID.

Thanks for the suggestion. It is definitely an option I will consider. I have tried out a few devices that are face ID based from relatives. I still prefer having a physical home button, but I realize I probably will need to compromise since it looks like my options are limited. More important than anything for me is a compact phone that is small in size and it looks like the 12 mini you mentioned is a bit smaller than the SE.

As Ladybug suggested, you can kinda workaround FaceID if you really want to (passcode instead of FaceID)

(Even putting a virtual button on screen to replicate the features the button used to provide).

But give FaceID a shot, it is more reliable for me that TouchID was.

So once you unlock the OG SE? You don't touch the screen? And you have touch ID disabled?

How would you type in the code with gloves on?

Lol I dunno... brain fart I guess.

ETA: I do think the Mini with FaceID is his best solution...that is also the phone I am waiting on.

If you use gloves "for smartphones" (braided tissue interweaved with conducting fiber), the "false button" senses the touch.

Like these, or these other ones.

Or you could go the old school way
