I was following some friends in their travel and really enjoyed this. But once they went across the border to Canada nothing worked anymore. Can anyone give me an explaination as to why? or what has to be done to continue to see their travel.

They may have disabled the tracking. You can try sending them another request.

I did try and I finally called them and they had not. So I really don't know what happened.

That's weird. I know it's supported in Canada as Apple lists it on their CA site. Is it possible they lost their data connection? A data connection is required to use Find My Friends.
