Find my iPhone last location when offline

Is there no way to find where the iPhone was last before it went offline? I misplaced mine or lost it and it would be really helpful if they showed the last known location instead of the "offline" message. I read somewhere that they wipe the last location after 24 hours. Why would that be? If I knew where it was last it would help me narrow down if I lost it or where it was misplaced. It was my old iPhone 4S and used for testing / developing so I did not notice it was gone until it was too late to track and the battery was probably drained. It was in wifi only mode and usually anywhere I go with it has wifi so it should have had a last location. I can't find any good email address for apple to see if the keep the last location but just don't display it.
