Find my phone for child's phone

I was hoping to use the Find My Phone service to keep track of the iphone 5 I'm about to pass down to my child, but I'm confused about whether I'll need to keep my Apple ID on the 5 to use the Find My Phone service. If I put a new Apple ID on the 5 just for him, would I still be able to to find the phone via Find My Phone?

I use Find friends which is via an app on iOS 9.

One of my adult children keeps an eye on me.... Lol.
