I'm a complete Mac newbie and unsure about some of the things that appear under devices in Finder.

I installed VLC player and after installation I now have an entry for VLC under devices. I'm not sure why that is and why it is there.

Is anyone able to shed some light on it?

That's most likely the .dmg file that you installed VLC Player from. That file is on your Desktop. Just eject it and drag that file to your Trash. You don't need it.

Also look at the free AppCleaner.
In most cases, app removal software like AppCleaner doesn't do a thorough job of finding and removing files/folders related to deleted apps. For more information, read this and this. If you just want to delete the app, drag the .app file to the trash. No other software needed. If you want to completely remove all associated files/folders, no removal apps will do the job.

The most effective method for complete app removal is manual deletion:
