Finder and frequently visited website

Hi, Im new to macos still figuring out stuff been using windows for the past 20 years! When I open Finder and navigate and for example open a picture and I close that picture it doesnt bring me back to the Finder window where I clicked on the picture its like I excited Finder. I then go to the dock and click on Finder to open it again! What am I doing wrong? Also do frequently visited websites sync over icloud? Because right now my iphone’s frequently visited websites in safari are not showing up in safari on my macbook. Bookmarks and history and everything else is synced
