I'm trying to create a clone drive of my mac as my hard drive is slowly dying and i want to replace it soon. I have a white Macbook early 2008, Intel 2.4 gHz. I've had it for a little over 2 years now but after a string of crashes i want to create a bootable clone on an external until i can swap out the internal hard drive and install the OS all over again.

I tried using Carbon Copy Cloner, and it gave me a few I/O errors. Most of them were files that weren't necessary but quite of few of them were in the "/var". If I wanted a bootable drive, is it necessary for me to copy all contents of "/var" or no.
