Recently got Snow Leopard for my late-2008 MacBook and did a clean wipe before installing it and transferring my apps and settings over using Migration Assistant (with an external). Updated everything with AppFresh, repaired permissions, cleaned out old files, etc. Had a few bumps along the way but managed to get everything working smoothly.
...until Finder started randomly freezing on me about every two or three hours, regardless of the programs I've been using. I've tried all that I can think of -- cleared preference files, repaired permissions, reset the PRAM and SMC, etc. What is most irritating is that it does it in a way so that it won't produce a CrashReporter log for me to show you all -- I'll be running Word with Firefox/Chrome in the background (or vice-versa), and the pinwheel will pop up, preventing me from using the Finder, the dock, Spotlight, etc. I've tried force-quitting Finder, both through the Force Quit Window or through the terminal, but in both cases all it does is make the whole desktop and menu bar at the top disappear except for the Dock, which remains there but is unclickable. And in half the cases the Force-Quit menu won't even show up. Each time I'm forced to shut down the computer completely and restart.
I can't think of any consistent conditions between the crashes, other than that I was using Firefox/Chrome and Word.
I've searched the forums as best I can, but all the results I've found aren't quite the same error I'm having now and they date back to when SL first came out, September-ish.
The only thing I can think of is to make a new account and transfer everything over to it slowly to see if that helps. Is there a practical/fast way of doing that? Or is there some other fix I haven't tried? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
