finder - intermittent freezing

every now and then I will return to my mac pro and try to click on one of my HDD icons on the desktop - to bring up finder .. but the icon refuses to gain focus and things appear frozen - the only solution is to resart finder in the force-quit window...

has anyone else seen this?
