Hi all

When I'm looking at files and folders in Finder, I want it to be in List view. When I open a folder that contains photos, I want it to show them as tiles. However, when I set a folder to show as tiles, it changes *all* folder options, meaning my normal files and folders start showing as tiles too, when they should be showing as a list. How do I fix this so that it shows the right view depending on the contents of the folder? This is proving to be a major headache coming from Windows 7.

In addition, the Finder window keeps on defaulting to a size that isn't wide enough to view all columns. I keep on having to press the + button to make it shows all the columns of information. How do I fix this so that it shows all of the information straight away?

I have to admit, these are some really major usability hurdles I've come across, and after a week of peaceful usage, I have that feeling of buyers remorse again right now because of this!

I'd be very greatful if someone could help me fix these problems before I decide this MBP has to go back!

Thanks

Michael.

EDIT - I have found the 'always open in x view' box which seems to have solved that problem! No solution to the other problem yet though.

For having Finder remember window size:
  1. Close all Finder windows
  2. Click Finder icon in Dock to open a new Finder window
  3. Without selecting any folders or items, resize window as you want it.
  4. Close that window.
  5. Now when you open a window through the dock or Ctrl+N it should open at that size.

Finder > Preferences > General
Always open folders in new window

^Checked or not checked?

If not checked, it is difficult (though not impossible) to maintain different window sizes for different folders. When opening a folder in the same window, the window size does not adjust to the size that folder was when it was last closed. Instead, the window size stays the same as it was for the previous folder. Only if you know that the second folder has the same size window is it "safe" to open that folder. Or, if you don't mind lots of white space, just resist the temptation to downsize a window with fewer items in it and leave ALL windows the same size.
