Kind of a strange problem, just started a few weeks ago, but when I try to open anything from a .jpg to an .mp4 or just about any file I can find, instead of just opening the appropriate application (Preview for photos, VLC for videos, etc.) like normal, instead it says there is no application set to open it, and I have to go choose 'Other' and then search for the application in order to open the file.

Even if I open up 'Info' on a file, go down to 'Open With', & then choose the appropriate application, then select 'Change All', it seems to work, and the file will then open with a double-click like normal ... but then the next time I open my laptop, it forgets all over again. As if I had never just gone through the process.

I apologize if this thread has been made, I couldn't find one like it.

Any ideas are appreciated, thanks!

I tried running this in Terminal:

/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user

It works for a while, but then the next time I come back to my laptop it still forgets.

I can't seem to figure this one out

There's a way to fix this problem once and for all.

You need to download the "RCDefaultApp" preference pane:
http://www.rubicode.com/Software/RCDefaultApp/

It's "older software", but it STILL WORKS, and that's what's important.

Install it, then open it and you'll see how to set it up to specify "what opens what" to your liking.

Again, I think this can solve your problems...
