Finder keeps jumping to front?

I'm running 10.4.11 on a Powerbook G4 (1ghz) with a gig of RAM. No matter what application I'm running or what I am doing (scrolling, typing, viewing), every minute or two the Finder jumps to the front and whatever I'm doing stops. The app remains open in the background and I have to click on the app window to reenter from the finder.

I've never heard of this and have been using Macs forever. Any advice?

i don't know what that is....it just asks as though I clicked on the desktop and brings the finder up instead of Firefox, or any other program. Tell me where to look for the console.

Twice. Looks like I'm headed for a reinstall? I just performed a software update so maybe it's something in there. My dad suggested Cocktail and I have it loaded but I'm not sure what to do with it--it looks complex and possibly dangerous.
 
You may be, but there are still a few things you can try. Delete ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist, then log out and back in again. Does that help?
 
Are you looking in the user library or the root library here? This is the user library I'm referring to, so /Users/Matt/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist.
 
This sounds like a previous issue on the discussion board. Go into your system preferences and see if you have a Stuffit AVR preference pane. If you do, the workaround for now is to either remove that preference pane or to go into that system preference and turn off the feature in the first tab/menu there. If you don't, the issue is that something is conflicting with the Quicktime update you just installed recently. Hope this helps.

Okay, done. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. If it didn't work then I'll be interrupted while I'm typing this.....nothing yet......still nothing.....still nothing....seems to have worked. Thanks very much, but I have to ask: WTF? That is one serious bug. Just searching for the preferences files I'd be kicked out of the window and into a blank finder and have to start over again. I don't think I've ever been so frustrated on a Mac since System 7. Certainly not since OSX in almost any variation.

Since you're on the line--what do you think of the Dell Mini 9 hack? Their 3g enabled version has a $350 rebate if you sign up for the ATT 3g service (2 years at $60/month. Any experience there?

It seems like a great deal. OSX runs pretty nicely on the Mini 9, but you will have to do a lot of research, and orient yourself with the terminal in case something goes awry.

If you mean the Dell question, I just thought I'd ask since it seemed I had two gurus on the line. No disrespect meant and I appreciate your efforts. I can't tell you how frustrating that was....

As far as the Dell--I've been waiting for years for Apple to make a sub-notebook or small(er) netbook. I've never owned a PC, so I'm just curious if either of you have any experience with hacking them to run MacOS. I know that even if Apple were to come out with a comparable sub/netbook it would cost a lot more than $99 (with rebate) or even the $500 or so it would cost without the 3g contract.

Anyway--thanks a ton to both of you for your help.
